Form 2290 for the Tax Year 2019 - 20 can still be filed electronically at Tax2290.com
IRS Tax Form 2290 must be filed for each month when a taxable vehicle is first used on public highways. The current period begins on July 1, 2020 and ends on June 30, 2021 of the following year. The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of first use. The filing rules apply whether you are paying the tax or reporting suspension of the tax.
For vehicles first used on a public highway during July, file Form 2290 and pay the appropriate tax between July 1 and Aug. 31. Why wait till the due date file it now and receive back your IRS stamped Schedule-1 proof immediately. If you place an additional taxable truck on the road during any month other than July that was registered in your name, you are liable for the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (Form 2290) on it, prorated for the months during which it was in service. You must file Form 2290 for these trucks by the last day of the month following the month the vehicle was first used on public highways.
August 31st Deadline for Tax Year July 2020 - June 2021
As stated above when a heavy motor vehicle is placed on highways in July 1, 20207 then it is liable to pay 2290 HVUT taxes on it by August 31st. However the normal due date for filing the 2290 truck tax returns is August 31st and IRS issues you the stamped Schedule-1 copy with the VIN# on it which you can use in return to register your heavy vehicles with your state and DOT/DMV authorities.
These due date rules apply whether you are paying the tax or reporting the suspension of tax. It is important to file and pay all your Form 2290 taxes on time to avoid paying interest and penalties.
‘First Used Month’ other than July
If a vehicle is first used on a public highway after July of the current year, then the 2290 tax is prorated and paid by the actual due date. You must file Form 2290 for these trucks by the last day of the month following the month the vehicle was first used on public highways. If the vehicle is still being used in July of the following year, the Form 2290 filing deadline for it would be Aug. 31.
Example. John purchases a new taxable vehicle on Aug. 3, 2020. John is required to register the vehicle in his name. He first uses the vehicle on a public highway in Aug. 2020. John must file a new Form 2290 reporting the new vehicle by Sep. 30 2020, for the period beginning July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021. If this same truck is still on the road in July 2020, John would file Form 2290 for it and any other vehicles that are still in service by Aug. 31, 2020.
Vehicles used or acquired after July, in this case you acquire a vehicle and use it on the public highways in any month other than July, and you are liable for the tax for the prorated tax period. You must file IRS Form 2290 and pay the tax by the last day of the month after the month you first use the vehicle.
